Impact of video games on divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2018 | Uncategorized

There are a number of factors that can lead to divorce. Infidelity and drug problems have frequently received blame for divorces throughout the last few decades. However, there is a new factor that could lead to an increase in divorce, and it is video games. More specifically, the popular video game Fortnite has received blame for contributing to divorces this past year.

Arizona is a no-fault state for divorce. That means a couple does not necessarily need a reason to separate. They can merely claim they have grown apart. One way people can grow apart is if one dedicates all of his or her time and energy on playing a video game the other spouse does not enjoy, which can be the case with Fortnite.

What do reports say?

One recent survey found that since the beginning of 2018, approximately 200 divorce petitions have cited Fortnite as a reason for the separation. That means roughly once a day for the past year, a couple has divorced due to the video game.

What could be the reason?

There is nothing inherently wrong with playing video games, but an obsession with any game could exacerbate problems that already existed before the game came out. For starters, a spouse may spend more time playing the game rather than try to repair a failing relationship. The marriage was already on thin ice, but an inability to actively work toward repairing it contributed to its ultimate failure.

Have other video games contributed to divorces?

Video game addiction is as harmful to a marriage as any other addiction. Over the years, many video games have come up as a reason for divorce, including World of Warcraft, Halo and Call of Duty. While it can certainly harm a marriage, couples who play video games together may actually benefit. Sharing interests can build upon the relationship and reduce the likelihood of divorce.
