Thoughtful And Supportive Same-Sex Divorce
On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a groundbreaking legal opinion in which marriage between two persons of the same sex was deemed legal and valid. Marriage was declared a fundamental right of U.S. citizens, straight or gay.
Before the Supreme Court ruling, we were some of the rare Phoenix area lawyers who were sensitive to the issues that arise in same-sex families. With the new era that has dawned, we look forward to continuing a special relationship with LGBTQ+ couples.
Our Unique Experience Will Work For You
Because of the ruling, LGBTQ+ couples can marry, divorce and enjoy the same protections under state law as heterosexual partners. Since Arizona is one of only a handful of community property states, this protection is invaluable during the division of property and determination of spousal support (alimony).
It also allows same-sex couples to return to their maiden names upon issuance of the divorce decree. Same-sex couples are now bound by the same duties and responsibilities that are part of the marriage contract.
