Children also need help adjusting to a divorce

On Behalf of | Sep 5, 2019 | Divorce

Parents in Arizona and throughout the country may have a hard time dealing with the fact that their marriage has come to an end. However, they must make sure that they stay strong for their children. It is important to never argue with the other parent in front of the kids or say bad things about them to a child.

The most important reason to be civil around a child’s other parent is that it protects the child from negative feelings. Children tend to think that they had something to do with the fact that their parents are no longer together. Instead of devoting energy to bringing a parent down, that energy may best be used to focus on the relationship between the parent and child.

Children should always be made to feel as if both of their parents love them. They should also know that they will always have the love and support of both parents no matter how they may feel about each other. Ideally, parents will strive to ensure that the divorce causes as few changes to a child’s education or social life as possible. If possible, strive to have family nights to ensure that everyone gets to spend time together.

Parenting time and child custody issues may be points of emphasis during a divorce proceeding. However, custody and visitation issues are generally decided separately from property division and alimony. It may be possible for parents to create a plan on their own that a judge could then make permanent. A judge will generally only approve a parenting plan if it is determined to be in a child’s best interest.
