3 tips for getting a divorce in your 20s or 30s

On Behalf of | Mar 8, 2019 | Uncategorized

Young marriages can be beautiful and full of life, but marriage can be difficult in your 20s or 30s. Many millennials who marry young struggle with having healthy relationships, leaving some to get divorced. If you find yourself in this situation, you may not know how to handle it.

Getting a divorce is hard, especially if you do not have many examples of good relationships in your life. You may also find it difficult to get back into the dating scene after your breakup. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you navigate marriage, divorce and moving on as a millennial.

1. Focus on collaboration

The worst thing you can do for your emotions and finances is having a nasty, contentious and bitter divorce. Your goal should be to get through the process as collaboratively as possible. The breakup does not need to be destructive or adversarial. While arguments and disagreements are inevitable, you can choose to compromise instead of seek vengeance.

2. Let yourself grieve

You may feel the temptation to have a rebound relationship as your marriage fails, but you may need a lot more time to process everything. The grieving process is crucial for truly recovering and moving on to have better relationships in the future. Take this time to work on yourself, spend time with friends and consider talking to a therapist or life coach. The year following your divorce should be all about re-discovering who you are.

3. Re-enter the dating scene with purpose

Before you jump into a new relationship, make sure you let your marriage and divorce teach you valuable lessons. Once you are ready, put yourself in situations where you may encounter people you want to date. Do not think of your divorce as a disadvantage. In reality, it teaches you exactly what you want out of a relationship.
